Take aways from workshop on Stångebro and Skäggetorp
Stångebro
Many of the groups’ proposals focused on similar approaches for the future development of the Stångebro and Skäggetorp districts. What we have compiled here should be seen as some of the “main features” of this work. In several cases, the strategies were described in very similar ways across all groups. Some points below reflect proposals shared by multiple groups, while others may differ slightly in detail. A few points have also been included even if they may not represent the majority view, as they were forward-looking and innovative. The summary below should be read as a simplified overview—a short digest highlighting the main directions and, in some cases, proposals raised by individual groups.

Programming:
- Make room for culture! Keep existing buildings until the land is needed for urban transformation. This will take time—activate the area in the meantime.
- Enable affordable rents for cultural activities. For example, through land allocation requirements—introduce “double land allocation.” This means property owners must take responsibility for one of the existing buildings.
- Involve associations, youth, and the public in planning—invite and create participation.
- Create space for cultural life west of Stångån. Let Kv1 and other suitable existing buildings near the railway become a “cultural cluster.” This will also activate Stångebro and create flows.
Urban Transformation:
- Build “from the inside out”—start expanding from the west toward the east. The expansion will take time—ensure connection to the city as step one.
- Capture the city’s identity—build on recognizable characteristics to create a “Stångebro identity” linked to the city’s design and scale.
- Remove the old Norrköpingsvägen—redirect traffic to the area’s outer edges as much as possible.
- Match existing tall buildings (e.g., SAAB Arena) in scale, then step down toward the surroundings. Small-scale development in the center.
- Thoughtful scale! Start from the human scale—where tall buildings are possible, ensure they are placed in the “right” locations.
- Emphasize key axes and sightlines—connect Stångebro to the city via multiple bridges. Link visual connections with physical ones.
- Establish park corridors (and green links) early.
- Use stormwater management needs as an asset—see water as a quality and resource for the eastern park.
- The meeting with the Stångån river space is important—work with well-designed park qualities. Develop the park as the “heart” between the city and Stångebro.
- Improve the existing “city center side” to create a better interface with Stångebro—think “double-sided,” not “one-sided”—essential for creating an urban feel in Stångebro.
Skäggetorp

Develop existing qualities and leverage the area’s own strengths:
- Create and enhance meeting places and destinations.
- Skäggetorp Center could become a bazaar/market or “vegetable square.”
- Enable a “food street.”
- Organize festivals, flea markets, and an art park.
- Develop Glyttingebadet into a key destination.
- Build a positive identity for Skäggetorp!
- Create attractions and businesses that draw visitors from the rest of the city—e.g., “fine dining,” workplaces, etc. Develop opportunities for student life (e.g., “Röda Magasinet”).
- Enhance and strengthen green spaces—develop playgrounds into themed play parks and “play biotopes.” Renovate football fields, etc.
- Develop a “social action plan” for strategic, long-term, and broad work toward a shared vision.
- Participation—ensure property owners, civil society, the municipality, and residents collaborate. “Turn the arrows”! Don’t think “inside out”—create values in Skäggetorp that make the rest of the city want to come there: “You row to an island if it offers value.”
- Create more housing and tenure forms—enable a more diverse housing market. Transform apartment blocks into row houses. Think smart—develop, don’t demolish!
- The market requires collaboration—low property values. Reward property owners who invest in the area—create a “development fund.”
Urban Transformation:
- Remove parking lots in front of Skäggetorp Center—turn them into a “green meeting place”/square.
- Create (or strengthen) a clear central axis running west–east (south of Skäggetorp Center).
- Connect to greenery in the central parts of the district—let greenery be visible and flow toward the Center’s entrance.
- Strengthen the interface with Tornbyvägen—straighten the road and make it more urban (e.g., tree-lined avenue and clear pedestrian/cycle paths).
- Create an express cycle path to Skäggetorp following Ostlänken from the station.
- Open up the southern part of the area with a “socioduct”—a broad, well-designed link to Gottfridsberg. Limit/transform Nygårdsvägen in the south (reduce barrier effects).
- Connect to the city via Tornby/Tyttorpsgatan.
- Build housing and add activities in Tornby. Program an “experience corridor” along Tyttorpsgatan and its extension.
- Address Bergsvägen’s barrier effect—put it in a tunnel or reroute it west of Skäggetorp (along Nygårdsvägen).
- Create a “socioduct” between Skäggetorp and Tornby.
- Transform Bergsvägen into a “smart street”—build attractive housing along it.
- Build a tram line from the station via Skäggetorp to LiU.
- Strengthen the connection to Ryd/LiU with a cycle path through Rydskogen.
